Temporary Protection Status for Honduras and Nicaragua

|

The Secretary of Homeland Security recently announced that beneficiaries of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) from Honduras and Nicaragua may now extend their protected status for an additional 18 months.

The TPS prevents the deportation of roughly 83,349 Hondurans and 4,275 Nicaraguans. The U.S. initially granted protection to hundreds of thousands in Honduras and Nicaragua in 1998 following a catastrophic hurricane.

This is the twelfth time that the USCIS has renewed the TPS extension so far.

In order to register for the extension, eligible nationals must apply with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) between October 16 and December 15, 2014. It is crucial to re-register as soon as possible to avoid any delays or forfeiture of rights. As a re-registration, there is no application fee

Additionally, beneficiaries of TPS are encouraged to apply for a new Employment Authorization Document in order to gain an expiration date of July 5, 2016.
